Message from Rife Shropshires: We are rapidly approaching one of our saddest days, April 19, 2021, the final dispersal of our beloved Shropshire flock. From the very beginning, that September day in 1961, when Lowell Douce dropped off nine of his old brood ewes and a loaner ram, I've very much enjoyed our Shropshires. Those original specimens were not pretty at $20 each, but I raised six lambs that initial year. My family was novice about sheep raising. The three males provided my market lamb project that year and a ewe lamb turned out just pretty nice, won her class over a group of eight Shropshire ewe lambs at our county fair. This gave me the fever and Dad went back to Lowell and bought six more, much better ewes that following fall. That was my start and I credit Lowell. He had been the 4-H agent in Highland County, Ohio for several years and worked hard at nurturing and mentoring young folks to improve their desire to win and to succeed in their endeavors. He provided "hands on" guidance and instruction. Here we are 60 years later and our proudest accomplishment through the years has been all of our "Best consignment" awards: 11 Midwest Stud Ram, 12 Ohio Classic, 5 Illinois Spectacular and 2 Great Lakes. These awards can't be won with two or three good entries, but with an entire consignment of a top shelf selection of very well-presented animals at each of those sales. We were also awarded Premier Exhibitor Banners for eight Ohio State Fair Shropshire shows from 1999 to2017. Through that time frame this was the largest and toughest Shropshire show on earth. Even more rewarding and enjoyable are the many friendships Julie and I have made from every corner of this land. I received a nice note from our friend, Larry Larimore in Delaware just prior to our March 8th sale. He wrote, "Thinking about you, dispersing a lifetime passion has to be tough." Julie and I delivered three really fancy, young ewes to Jim and Steve Isler of Prospect, OH from that first sale. We unloaded them in a small paddock by the barn. As we stood there visiting over their purchases, it really hit me. It is tough! Very tough! Folks ask, "What are you going to do?" My answer, "I'm going to write my memoirs." We trust these animals will provide similar enjoyment and rewards for advancing your showing and breeding programs. Thank you!

Comments: We maintained a flock of 140 Shropshire brood ewes for many years. Roadster would be used quite heavily if we still had that size of flock today. When I was fortunate to find a ram that we thought would move us to the next level, I would stick my neck out with confidence and use him. That worked with Barnes Farms "Mamuth" for the '84, '85 and '86 lamb crops and then the Barnes "Triple-K" ram, who sired "Horsepower," born in '92. He, as a lamb, was champion at Ohio and Indiana and then on to the National Show in Sacramento to be Reserve. What a stud "Triple-K" proved to be. Tim graciously allowed us to bring five ewes a year the first four years of "Triple-K's" life, and finally agreed to sell us for $2000, a half interest and possession. We then bred a large percentage of our flock for the '96 and '97 lamb crops to "Triple-K". He also sired "Timberwolf", born in '96 for us, who was Champion at Ohio as a lamb, both Junior and Open, and went on to Louisville to be Champion. The "Triple-K" daughters really advanced our flock. Then later came "Breakthrough". Sandy Bushatz had purchased a bred ewe from Mark McCabe and Sandy brought a late February son to the 2003 Ohio State Fair. The Ohio folks hosted the National show that summer and on Junior show day, Judy Moore was judging and "Breakthrough" was Reserve Champion. As Sandy walked out of the ring with her hardware, I went over and asked if I could have first chance to own him. She was so excited from the win that I had to make my request a second time on the following morning. Tom Brown judged the 303 head National Show while on a walker. While Sandy's ram was in the ring in class, I went over to my old friend, Larry Shroyer, who was watching from ringside and asked for his opinion of the ram. He said, "Buy him!" "Breakthrough" went on to be Reserve Champion on that day also. After the show, while we were putting blankets back on our sheep to move to Indiana the next day, Mark McCabe came over and asked if I was serious about Sandy's ram, as Mike Anderson was over at their pens wanting to buy him. Justin and I went over, handled him and watched him walk. I asked Sandy the price and bought the best RRNN ram I had seen to date. He gave us 114 lambs that first crop. From that first lambing, born in the spring of 2004, we sold a group of 30 young yearling ewes to start a flock for Temple Hall farm in Virginia, 26 of which were sired by "Breakthrough." We had high hopes that these folks would take hold and become long time Shropshire breeders, but that didn't come to fruition. "Breakthrough" really hit a lick when used on our "Flair" daughters. We purchased Erik Mrozinski's "Transformer" in early 2012. At our 1st LAI in August of that year, we bred 80 ewes to him. His 2013 daughters really left a mark in our flock, a real base for "Kaboose" and "Bone Chiller." "Roadster" is a grandson of both "Kaboose" and "Bone Chiller." "Roadster" puts it all together. His first daughters have been very well accepted in our two March sales. He's a very stout, proven stud with loads of bone, shag, and depth of body. He's very balanced with legs out on the corners and as good of Shropshire breed character as you might find. To me, what he may cost isn't the important consideration. What he will do for your flock is the approach. At any price, he's worth owning!

Comments: A quite impressive yearling son of "Roadster". He's very high-headed, upfronted and good hided. He's thick throughout with a nice rump and loads of shag. His mother is by "Grizzly Mountain", a son of Madness and a daughter of "Transformer" that was our Champion ewe at Ohio in 2014. With the sheep and lamb market at the level of the past several months you can't justify keeping a ram around that's not really special. We feel this prospect has great potential to head most any flock in the country.

Comments: A most attractive son of "Macho Man", the young ram we selected to use at both our May and August 2020 LAI's. We bred close to thirty females each day to him. We have always put him at the top of the 2020 lamb crop. He's sired by "Shaq Attack", the extremely thick son of "Kaboose" and out of the "Madness" daughter, 15-078, a ewe we always rated near the top of our flock. Her full sister, 17-062, is the mother of "Hot Rod" and his twin, "Monster Truck". "Hot Rod" is the sire of "Roadster", Lot #1. This neat ram lamb is out of a "Bone Chiller" daughter that sells as Lot #5. She is out of our grandson, Zachary's futurity Steve Spayd ewe from 2017. Lots of style in this ram. Take a good look! This lamb's twin sister went to Olivia Clark, IN, this past February. You'll see her this summer at the shows.

Special Note: Ultra Sound shows (one plus) due April 26th to Newcastle. Please understand this is an APPROXIMATION and should be used as a tool when making management decisions. We will give one free bag of Umbarger 19% starter with each ewe purchased that has baby lambs at side or ewes that will lamb shortly. This feed is very fresh (made in late March). Also, an extra bag for any ewe with triplets!
Comments: She's a commanding, broody female with a clean front, very long-sided, with a good top. A fancy daughter went to Victoria Kovacs last fall. She gave us twin rams last Sept. 30th. Will lamb one plus around April 26th to "Newcastle", a son of "Roadster." We had 5 ewes lamb from our May LAI. They gave us and raised 8 nice lambs of which 7 were male. Through the years we would put a young ram lamb with our fall lambers to attempt getting them rebred for April. "Newcastle" settled four of the five fall lambers and they all sell in this event. Mark McCabe and Sandy Kovacs used "Newcastle" to clean up for a few weeks for March lambs. They report some beautiful lambs from him. His mother was sired by Dave High's 2018 Ohio Champion "Teddy". Most years 60 to70% would lamb again in April. We had a fantastic ethnic trade for many years and they wanted lambs year-round. This was a way of turning more dollars. We quite often kept the better females and bred them to lamb in October the next year at 18 months-a neat program that worked for us. The mother of this ewe gave us four other daughters. They went to Kirby Ballard, IL, Emily Washburn, NY, Adam Moore, MO, and O'Neill Shropshires, PA. The ewe O'Neill's bought was our Reserve Grand Ewe at the 2016 Big E National Show. She is quite a female!

Her twins, born last Sept. 30th, are "Oh Yeah", the fantastic fall ram lamb selling as Lot #3 and his twin sister that we sold Feb. 12th to Olivia Clark, IN. Special Note: Selling with 4/14 triplets ram lamb #032, ram lamb #033, ewe lamb #034 by Newcastle. Attention to anyone that would like to get in the Shropshire business and immediately get to the top! Purchase Lot 6 Tag 18-188 and her triplet babies. There's a fabulous ewe lamb in her group of three. Then buy semen from John Dirlam's "Stone Cold" ram and flush her and keep flushing her (Our very popular fall ram lamb in our March 8th sale that brought $1850 was a result of 18-188 bred to "Stone Cold".). If everything goes right, you could possibly have twenty full sisters after flushing twice/yr for two years. You also will have her April 14th daughter and her two brothers, one if which already shows great promise. What a flock you will have! We will give one free bag of Umbarger 19% starter with each ewe purchased that has baby lambs at side or ewes that will lamb shortly. This feed is very fresh (made in late March). Also, an extra bag for any ewe with triplets!
Comments: A powerful stud ewe. She's the mom of "Icebreaker", the ever-popular fancy fall ram lamb from our March 8th sale that Mark McDermit, IN, purchased to head his son, Sam's flock for $1850. She is one of the larger daughters of "Kaboose". Her mother is by "Loch Ness", and goes back to the most predictable 06-125 ewe. What a family to tie into. This "Loch Ness" grandmother gave us twin, fall ewe lambs in Oct of '19, that went to the Street Family and also Erik Mrozinski, both major breeders in Indiana. The ultrasound showed twins due April 10th by "Newcastle." Even our three 10-year-old Pyrenes will hate to see this really cool gal leave.

Comments: Another stylish, powerful ewe with a thick, wide top and lots of rib shape. In the video, she appears a bit dark fleeced but it's dirt. The Gabe Fitzsimmons Family, IN, are most happy with "Edge", her Oct of '19 "Shaq Attack" son. She then raised her April 14. 2020 twins before a bit of a rest to let you breed her to the ram of your choice. "SELLING OPEN!" Her mom by our 2016 Ohio Champion and Big E National Reserve Champion Ram "Ghost Pepper", sold in our July 2019 Production Sale to the Phil Colwell Family in TN to start a new flock for their grandson. They bought 10 ewes and a ram that day. What a start! The grandmother of this ewe was a fancy show ewe for us in Louisville and her mom was Champion at Ohio in 2014. Comments: Selling open! This "Kaboose" daughter has loads of depth of body, rib shape, and a very level top. She first gave us a 2/10/20 "Bone Chiller" ram lamb. We LAI'd her last May to Dirlam's "Stone Cold" ram and got 9/29/20 twin sons. "King of the Ring" brought $1000 in our March 29th sale to Kurt Kishman Family, IA. His twin went to the Amish Mt Hope Auction on Jan. 25th. He was just about as nice, but just how many rams do you feed when there's this high market price? The mother of this ewe sold to the Dirlam Family, IN, from our July, 2019 Production Sale. The grandmother by "Madness" sold in our Nov, '19 Bred Ewe Sale to David Harrell, IN. Her mom and grandmom were each power show ewes for us. 11-176 and her mom, 05-076, which made the trip to the National Show in Puyallup, WA in 2005. What a great trip, seeing Mt Rainier on a clear morning when we first arrived! We have magnificent memories with wonderful folks at an awesome event.

Comments: One of the most attractive Shropshire females you will see. Her natural presence is beautiful. She's long, level and is just a class act, top attraction. She gave us twins by "Hot Rod" April 6, 2020. The ram, "Rock On", went to Audra Brigich,PA, in our March 29th sale and her twin sister to Petersen Sheep, MN from the same sale. She is carrying "Hot Rod" twins again, due April 19th, according to Brayden Burbrink's Jan 16th ultrasound. He's been very accurate with his readings and estimates. This is a daughter of "Bone Chiller" and out of a grand stud ewe, Switzer 15-389, which we bought out of their Dispersal in June of 2018. She was sired by Slack "Bootlegger" and out of a Cabaniss "Impulse" daughter. Both were Midwest Stud Ram Sale Grand Champion Rams. We hate to part with this magnificent female.

Comments: Excellent Shropshire breed type and well-muscled, with thickness throughout. She gave us "Macho Man" twin sons on October 1st and then on April 9th, a fabulous set by "Newcastle", a ram and a ewe. They are a big, stout pair with great color, as nice a set of twins as you could ask for. She's a great milker and a super attentive mother. What a package we offer here! She is sired by Mark and Marilyn McCabe's "Stinger", who won at Ohio as a lamb and later placed first at Louisville. Special Note: Ultra Sound shows (one plus) due April 30th by Hot Rod.
Comments: A strong, stout, broody female. She's long and pretty with a neat neck-shoulder junction. She gave us a ram lamb in late September and sells bred with one plus for April 30th to "Hot Rod". These "Bone Chiller" daughters are really nice. The mom of this ewe is sired by "Firewater", the "Bootlegger" son that went to the Paul Young Family in TN. This is from one of our top ewe families. She traces back to 01-143, that was Reserve at Ohio as a lamb and came back as a yearling and was Champion Ewe. She proved to be a great producer and we kept all three of her daughters in the flock, and they all produced extremely well.

Comments: She's got a beautiful Shropshire head. She's thick, deep, and good hided. She's flat gorgeous and above all sells on April 19th. with her twin baby boys by "Hot Rod", born April 10th, at side. They are both super cool! This gal is sired by Jerry and Mike O'Neill's "Hillbilly" ram, who's by "Kaboose" and out of a bred ewe they bought from us. Lot #12's mother was a fantastic show ewe in her day. Lot #13 is a beautiful twin sister to this ewe. I've always liked to put twin sisters in the flock and these two are each very special and definitely would not leave if we weren't hang'n it up. Sixty years is enough and I'm tired!

Comments: Twin to Lot #12. What a fancy fronted, most stylish and angular female with a very level rump. The ultrasound says, twins by "Hot Rod" around April 13th. The grandmother of Lots 12 and 13 is Kipp 2365. In November of 2008, we bought a set of ten outstanding ewe lambs from Jim and Terri Kipp, WI. Jim has been raising Shropshires longer than we have and he's still at it. Jim had used a couple of our rams and was doing quite well with his Shrops. We were selling so many sheep every year, and in order to keep our flock numbers up and also to provide a bit of an outcross for our stud rams, we bought this select group. The Kipp ewes worked very well for us. I trust these elite young females will get good homes. They can move a program along and further advance the breed.

Comments: Yet another really nice set of twin ewes, Lots # 14 and #15. Watch the video and notice how protective and attentive This ewe is with her March 18th "Hot Rod" son. She is not just a great mother, but a real milking machine. This lamb shows great promise and sells as a package with momma. The mother of these twin sisters is by "Madness". She gave us 17-131, who, along with her pen mate, each won their yearling ewe classes and the pair class at the 2018 Big E. Their most impressive feat was the previous March, each lambed and gave us really nice daughters. How many winning yearling ewes win a major September show after successfully raising March lambs? Shows the mothering ability and productivity that we've worked hard to stress. In addition to these twin daughters selling, she gave us a really fantastic "Kaboose" son, "Marvel", that sold to Ashley Fuss, MD, as a fall lamb in our July '19 Production Sale. The grandmother of these twins, 12-112, was Reserve Champion Ewe at the 2013 Ohio State Fair. Jared Poynter, IL, selected an outstanding, January, 2019 "Bone Chiller" daughter for his son, Westin. Our son, Justin, selected an early 2020 daughter for our granddaughter, Olivia. This grandmother, 12-112, not only performed in the show ring, but produced really nice lambs through her eighth year. She was sired by our 2009 Ohio Champion Ram, "Golden Ticket," and out of one of our most fantastic producing-females, 06-125. Lots 4, 6, 14 and 15 all go back to 06-125. Genetics that consistently breed on!

Comments: Twin to Lot #14. A very broody gal with depth of body, spring of rib and level rump. True Shropshire breed character follows this family for generations. The ultrasound shows twins by "Hot Rod", due April 9th. Julie and I want to thank everyone who has helped us with our sheep project through the years, all the many bidders and buyers from across the continent, and all the many dear friendships we've made. Although this is the last of our sheep that we will be raising, we hope to be able to visit and reminisce at sheep events for many more years. It's been a great ride! Thanks so very much to all.
